Curious Little Peppers

I was just doing a web search, hoping to find an answer to my question, what kind of peppers are these growing in my garden?

This last spring, I'd bought a six pack of assorted peppers from Home Depot. When they finally started to produce peppers, two of the plants put out what looked like bell peppers.

"Cool!" I thought. I love bell peppers. But the plant produced about twenty of them and they seemed to stop growing at 2 inches. I haven't picked any waiting to see if they would get any bigger or change in anyway. They haven't.

Finally, the other day I decided it was time to to pick a couple and see what they taste like. I was going to approach this very carefully. The last thing I needed was to burn off my tongue. So, I brought them in and threw them in the basket with the tomatoes that needed to finish ripening. When I looked a couple days later, one of them changed colors. First yellow, now a pale orange.

I'm wondering now if it will keep changing colors or if this is it's last hurrah before it starts to rot!

By the way, my web search is assuring me there is such a thing as a "Baby Bell Pepper." And indeed, when I cut it open, it looked and smelled like a bell pepper, but a little sweeter.

The smell was a lie. The pepper was way hotter than a bell pepper. So, the question remains, what ARE these little peppers?
